Prof. Johannes Chan, former dean of the University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Law, will speak at a fundraising lunch for the Human Rights Press Awards on Dec. 10, marking the UN’s Human Rights Day.
Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, 12:30 pm
Foreign Correspondents’ Club, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong.
Prof. Chan found himself in the news after the HKU Council’s controversial decision to reject his appointment as pro-vice-chancellor. The institution’s views on press freedom were called into question, especially after the council obtained a gag order against media outlets reporting on the case. He will speak to the FCC about academic freedom.
Also speaking on the day will be Mr. Henry Steiner, one of the world’s top branding experts, who has helped the HRPA with pro bono work. Mr. Steiner will speak about the creative process behind giving the HRPA a new look, and will be on hand to sign the T-shirts which carry the new mark.
The luncheon marks the opening of the HRPA’s 20th anniversary season.
Proceeds from the Luncheon will go to the HRPA, which honours rights-related reporting from across the Asia-Pacific region. The HRPA are organised by the FCC, Amnesty International Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Journalists Association.
