Myanmar media pioneer Sonny Swe to be keynote speaker at 22nd Human Rights Press Awards

The Human Rights Press Awards is delighted to announce that Myanmar media pioneer Sonny Swe will be the keynote speaker at the May 12 awards ceremony, to be held at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Hong Kong.

In 2000 Mr Swe co-founded the Myanmar Times, a venture that led to an eight and a half year stint in prison during the dark days of military rule. The long period of detention did not deter him and soon after being released, Mr Swe re-entered the publishing world and is now the CEO and founder of Frontier Myanmar magazine.

At a time when media groups are speaking out to demand the freedom of two Reuters journalists currently in jail in Myanmar, we are delighted to have Mr Swe speak at the awards ceremony about the vital need for freedom of the press and freedom of expression to protect fundamental rights.

At the ceremony, the winners of this year’s awards will be announced from what was a record number of entries, up 28 percent with 414 stories, photos, commentaries, videos, multimedia and radio pieces submitted.

“Best slate of entries in years, highlighting the disturbingly widening range of human rights abuses from religious intolerance in Pakistan to the award-winning Rohingya and China surveillance stories,” said one judge.

These annual awards, which are now in their 22nd year, recognise and honour excellence in journalism on human rights issues in Asia. The award recipients will share insights on their work at the ceremony which will be live-streamed on Facebook.

For the first time, the Human rights Press Awards is giving the public the chance to vote for the best photograph from four nominees selected by the judges. Get your vote in by May 6!
